![]() ![]() ![]() It follows that every row must have the same number of data columns as any other row in the table. Essentially this means the values in any row in a table must not be the same as those in any other row in that table, and each column in the table must only contain data that complies with the data-type specified for that column. It may comprise one or more tables of data items, but all of these must accord with the mathematical concept of a Relation. It is possible to copy and paste data from a spreadsheet or csv files directly to a new table in Base, BUT ONLY if the source data matches the strict requirements for a table in a relational database.Ī relational database is a strictly organized collection of data. Rather than waste it and given that we are saying much the same thing from differing starting points, I have imposed it on the thread in the hope that more than one explanation can sometimes help more than it confuses. I drafted this reply before seeing Villeroy's more experienced answer. OpenOffice macros provide an interface between a programmer and one particular office suite (or two since LibreOffice is still API compatible with OpenOffice). SQL is a universal description language to databases (since the 70ies more or less the same for almost all databases). Once you have wrong data in the spreadsheet (which may look right) you can not expect any software to turn them into correct data. If the data flavours of the text files are different (different separators, column orders, numeric formats etc.), you should use Calc with correct parameters to import the correct data types, hit F4 and then drag the data range onto the "Tables" icon of your registered database (no, you can NOT paste row sets into the grid view of an opened row set). Various databases (HSQL, MySQL, PSQL, MS, Oracle) provide many different ways to import text and you may even use Base. ![]() The one and only purpose of databases is that you never have to copy around data to different storages in different file formats. If you exported your csv data from some kind of standard database you should simply connect a Base document to that database and use it directly. ![]()
